At the Men’s breakfast on Saturday 17 April 2010 the speaker was Tim Dunwoody. We had 13 men present and the craic was good as always.
Tim used to belong to our church. He is currently employed as World Mission & Development Officer for Methodist Missionary Society Ireland. He talked a little about his former job for Christian Aid in which he travelled widely in the under developed world and had some interesting photos and insights. He also talked a little about his present work which also involves travel in support of the MMS(I) mission partners again with powerpoint illustrations. The emphasis of his talk however was the development of his own personal faith over the years as he has experienced conditions in the developing world and has met many amazing people. He used a series of images to represent the state of his faith. Initially his faith was like a box where Christianity could be fitted into a neat package and everything could be classified as right or wrong, good or bad etc. Later however he began to realize life is never very clear cut and his outlook became like a series of tracks leading in different directions. There is always a range of options and often the best route is hard to choose. Finally he sees life like making a leap. Sometimes a leap of faith is needed, sometimes a leap for joy.
Tim is a regular speaker and was fascinating to listen to. He has a high esteem for the people he has met in the underdeveloped world and has found them very sincere and hard-working.
